Kenneth Andrew Mahnken, 75, passed away on June 14, 2025, in Brooklyn, New York the city where he was born, raised, and spent his life.
Born on January 11, 1950, in Brooklyn to Fred and Patricia Mahnken, Ken was the second of eight children. From an early age, he navigated the world with remarkable determination and ingenuity. Though deaf from birth, Ken never allowed his disability to define him. Growing up in a hearing household, he found ways to bridge communication gaps and connect meaningfully with those around him.
Ken lived life on his own terms. He had a deep passion for mechanics and a creative mind that showed in everything he did. He especially loved building model cars, often adding working lights and remote controls. He also took great pride in fitting motors onto bicycles. Whether he was repairing something broken or inventing something new, Ken’s hands were always busy bringing his ideas to life.
He is survived by his beloved son, John, and daughter in law, Jeannette; the mother of his son, Debbie Passaretti; and four cherished granddaughters: Gianna, Ava, Adrianna, and Valentina. He also leaves behind his siblings Rick (Cecelia), Michael (Billy Jean), Tom (Denise), and Patti (Fritz), along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins who will remember him fondly.
Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Patricia; his brothers, Peter and Mark; and his sister, Judi.
Ken will be remembered for his resilience, creativity, and fiercely independent spirit. Life was never boring with Ken in it, and his unique energy left an impression on everyone who knew him.
He will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
