Martin Gerard Mulhern

“Earth receives an honored guest. Marty Mulhern lies to rest” ….W.H. Auden

Martin Gerard Mulhern born 28 SEPTEMBER 1949 in Brooklyn, NY to parents Kathleen (Gannon) Mulhern and Edward J. Mulhern, both deceased. He suffered from cancer for several years before finally succumbing on 13 Feb 2024. His ashes will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brooklyn.

Martin (Marty) was a lifelong native of Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, NY, who lived and died in the house he grew up. He was a quiet, unassuming and humble man whose life was one of service to country, church and community. He is a graduate of St. Mark’s School/Academy and Sheepshead Bay HS. Soon after high school, he volunteered for and entered service in the U S Air Force during the Viet Nam War era. He served as a Supply Sergeant stationed at Travis AFB in California. During this tour he was recognized as “Airman of the Year”. After completing 4 years of active service, he returned home to Brooklyn to live as a bachelor with “Mom” helping her navigate her aging years.

He began his community service as a volunteer counselor at the Sheepshead Bay Boys Club, donating his time and management skills. Mostly, Marty wanted to be a Cop, one of New York’s Finest; but he couldn't meet the height standards of the day. Not to be deterred he found a chiropractor who stretched him ½ inch and thus he began his career as a Police Officer in the then Housing Division. He spent most of those years working in Coney Island, walking the beat and protecting the local citizenry.  Following his 20-year retirement from the NYPD, he worked briefly at the Native American Museum in Manhattan as a Security Guard. He later started a second career as a Police Officer working for the Veterans Administration at the VA Hospital in Manhattan from which he ultimately retired.

He was a stalwart member of St. Mark’s Catholic church often serving as Church usher during services. He was a proud and true practitioner of the Catholic religion. Marty was a private person, something of an irascible curmudgeon on the outside but a kind and generous person on the inside.

He was a voracious reader and loved to discuss and provide solutions to the world’s problems.

He is loved and missed by all who knew him or crossed his path.

Marty is survived by 3 brothers James in NY, Tom in FL and Edward and wife Candi in CA. He has 5 loving sibling cousins, John, Kevin, Dennis, Maureen and Ann Hyland. He leaves behind a nephew Joseph, 3 nieces Gannon, Kristen, Karen and his sister-in-law Diane.

We love you and miss you, Marty ..may you rest in peace.
