Pauline Suggs, 86 years old, was born on December 19, 1938 in Washington, DC to Lily Hunter and Jack Suggs. Pauline moved in 1947, after her mother Lily took ill, to North Carolina with her grandmother and cousins. She graduated from Dillard High School in Goldsboro, NC in 1957. Pauline decided to return to her birthplace of Washington, DC where she met and fell in love with Rudy Moore, a military man. Soon after Pauline and Rudy separated and she relocated to New York City where she met her new love, James Black. On September 30th 1963 Pauline and James were blessed with a baby girl who they named Alicia Suggs.
Pauline was a kind woman, an intelligent woman, she was very sweet and compassionate, she had grace and poise. She was the kind woman who would offer her seat to someone in a bad mood and her kindness was returned with an apology for their bad behavior. Pauline taught her children to be respectful to others. Pauline was a hard worker who held many jobs including working for Izod Clothing, Kidder, Peabody, & Co, and Harlem Hospital. Pauline donated to many charities, including American Red Cross, United Way, Salvation Army, American Cancer Society, and many others. Pauline was a very generous woman, who would always keep dollar bills in her pockets to give to a needy person on the street.
Pauline filled the family with love with things like her two-hour phone call conversations, going shopping, and visits to Coney Island, concerts, and the movies. She loved to make chicken and dumplings, and banana pudding. She also liked to travel and enjoyed music, dancing, and a trip to a museum or a casino.
Pauline is preceded in death by her daughter Claudette Suggs, and her sister Mildred Suggs. Pauline is survived by her daughter Alicia Suggs, her sister Doris Mathews, and her brother Milton Suggs. She leaves behind four grandchildren, Terrain, Honesia, La Trece, and Tony, along with many nieces and nephews. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Alicia Suggs is proud to be the daughter of Pauline and will cherish the laughter, love, and kindness that her mother shared so freely.
